Diploma in Ophthalmology

Duration 2-3 Years/Semester system
Eligibility

Students are always advised to check selection criteria before applying for any college in admission whether they are eligible or not.

  • Colleges or Universities are providing admission for diplomas in Ophthalmology (DO) for the candidates who have qualified 10+2 or equivalent standard from a recognized College.
  • Some colleges even have eligibility criteria as 10th Standard.
Admission Process

Admissions in DIPLOMA courses are also done through both merit and entrance exams.

Direct Admission

The Admission Process of Diploma in Ophthalmology depends from college to college. Some colleges conduct their own entrance test before admission and on the basis of that entrance test selection is done , whereas some colleges or universities give Merit based admission along with a personal interview.

Step 1 – In the first step, students need to register themselves as the new applicant for whosoever college or university they wish to join.

Step 2 – In the second step, students need to fill the application form as per given instructions.

Step 3 – In this students need to provide their current or working email id and contact details for verification.

Step 4 – Students need to submit the asked documents in the given format.

Step 5 – Pay the application fee through net banking for further process.

Step 6 – Submit the application form.

Syllabus

Diploma Ophthalmology: Syllabus 

Diploma in Ophthalmology will be a one-year course. And the course is divided into two parts.

SEMESTER 1 SEMESTER 2
Applied Basic Sciences in Ophthalmology Clinical Ophthalmology including Refraction

Anatomy and Physiology

  • Anatomy of the eye and ocular adnexa
  • Embryology of the eye and adnexa
  • The visual pathways
  • Anatomy and Physiology of motor mechanism
  • Physiology of vision, colour vision, accommodation
  • Binocular vision and its development
  • Maintenance of intraocular pressure
  • The Neurology of vision (Visual pathway, papillary pathways and reaction) dark Adaptation.
  • Optics – elementary Physiological optics, optics of radioscopy and other dark Room procedures and ophthalmic equipment.
  • Physiology of aqueous humour and its circulation and maintenance of intraocular Pressure.
  • Maintenance of corneal transparency.
  • Tear circulation
  • Blood aqueous barrier.
Recent Advances including investigative therapeutic procedure, Community Ophthalmology including national programme, rehabilitation of blind.

Pathology and Microbiology

  • Pathology of ocular and adnexal lesions (Inflammatory, neoplastic, lens specification etc)
  • Microbiology of common organisms affecting the eye – Bacteria Staph. Strepto – pneumococci, gonococci diphtheria, Morax axenfeld bacillus, AFB, Lepra bacilli, pseudomonas etc.
  • Virus – Herpes Zoster, Simplex, adenovirus, trachoma etc.
  • Parasites, protozoa and fungi causing ocular lesion e.g., toxoplasma amoebiasis, toxocariasis, treponema, cysticercus, hydatid, microfilaria aspergillus, penicillium, candida etc.

Biochemistry

  • Vitamin A and its metabolism
  • Glucose metabolism
  • Aqueous composition
  • Biochemical aspects of cataract (Senile and diabetic)
  • Thyroid function tests
  • f) Tear film and its composition.
